Havana, February 7 (RHC)-- The First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel, recognized on Monday the projects and research results of different Cuban universities that set up their stand at the International Congress on Higher Education 'University 2022'.

During a tour of the exhibition spaces, the president noted how innovation is used in terms of sustainable and inclusive development, a premise that guides the event, which is held at the Havana Convention Palace.

Among the stands visited was that of the Marta Abreu de Las Villas Central University (UCLV), where the head of state graduated as an Electronic Engineer in 1982 and later, in 2021, received his PhD degree in Technical Sciences.

Aleida Suárez, director of Communications at the UCLV, explained to Prensa Latina that this institution supported the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic with initiatives such as the development of a diagnostician for this disease based on X-rays.

Other achievements of the higher education center include obtaining LC3 cement, which is cheaper, less polluting and has better properties, as well as innovations in artificial intelligence, robotics and precision agriculture.

"The university, which will celebrate its 70th anniversary this year (November 30), also exhibits results in potato cultivation, which would contribute to the nation's food sovereignty and the export of these products," Suarez said.

Diaz-Canel inaugurated the International Congress 'University 2022' with a conference entitled "Government management based on science and innovation: advances and challenges", in which he pondered the links between the knowledge sector, the production of goods and services, and public administration for the country's development.

The event will be in session until next Friday with virtual and face-to-face activities, due to the conditions imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Academics, professors and students from 34 countries will participate in workshops, symposiums and forums that will focus on the fulfillment of the Sustainable Development Goals, the university-industry link, knowledge management and the training of competent professionals.
