Cuba announces International Drum Competition “Guillermo Barreto in Memoriam”

Fiesta del Tambor

Havana, Feb. 18 (RHC)-- The Organizing Committee of the 19th Fiesta del Tambor –the Havana Rhythm and Dance Festival-- has called the "Guillermo Barreto in Memoriam" International Competition for Drummers, to be held March 1st and 2nd at Havana’s Hotel Nacional de Cuba.

The jury is made up of renowned personalities from the Cuban music scene, percussionists Enrique Pla, José Luis Quintana (Changuito) and Oliver Valdés.

The organizing committee offers free inscription to professional Cuban musicians or winners of previous editions of the festival, who reside on the island. Foreign percussionists are required to pay an inscription fee through the official website of the event at www.fiestadeltamborpopular.com

Contestants are to perform a two-minute drum solo in rumba clave pattern. The jury will select five finalists, who will then compete for the three prizes at a live performance on March 6th at the Amphitheater on Havana's Avenida del Puerto.

The winners will be announced at the closing of the Havana Rhythm and Dance Festival by the event’s president, Cuban musician Giraldo Piloto.
