Colloquium on Caribbean diversity

Havana, Feb. 24 (RHC)— The Caribbean Studies Center attached to the Havana-based Casa de las Americas will host the 8th International Colloquium ‘Caribbean Cultural Diversity: Resilience and Cultural Creation amidst the Pandemic.’ The hybrid event will take place May 24th through the 26th.

Taking into account the complex situation globally over the past two years due to Covid-19, the program will focus on new physical and virtual spaces for cultural creation, promotion and participation.

Participants will review also the work developed by artists, intellectuals, academics and other cultural actors to make visible the main problems caused and challenges posed by the expansion of the SarsCov2 virus, which causes the deadly disease, as well as alternatives adopted to keep culture alive beyond social distancing, the closure of cultural centers, the cancellation of public events and other restrictions and limitations imposed by the pandemic.

Several media outlets, websites and other community projects have readapted their work and content to impact peoples’ lives amidst such difficult circumstances, marked by the multi-sector crisis generated by Covid-19, coupled with natural disasters in several parts of the world, political violence and acute resource shortages.

Organizers said the colloquium debates will deal with culture in times of Covid-19: public and institutional policies; new spaces for cultural creation and dissemination; social movements and artistic groups: solidarity and support in dealing with the crisis; the mainstream and social media in times of Covid-19; education and environmental protection, among others.

Those interested in participating as panelists in the colloquium should submit their paper proposal in Spanish, English or French to the organizing committee by e-mail at seccaribe@casa.cult.cu. Dateline is April 1st, 2022.
