The 15th International Theater Festival kicked off at Havana’s National Theater on October 24th at 8:30 p.m. local time with a version of the immortal classic Anna Karenina by the Russian theater ensemble T. E. Academic Evgueni Vajtangov.

The opening confirms Russia as one of the countries that stand out for bringing important pieces to the festival. The presentation of theater plays from nine Latin American countries and an equal number from Europe is scheduled for Havana’s 15 Theater Festival.

Actors, actresses, theater experts and people from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Uruguay, Venezuela and Cuba are representing the New World at the festival, while participants from Germany, Denmark, Spain, Poland, Finland, France, Italy, Russia and Switzerland are performing for Europe.

Spain is one of the countries which have brought the largest number of plays and autochthonous stagings as well as pieces in cooperation with other nations. The Funeral, John’s Decision, and a Trilogy of Medieval Women make up the Spanish offer, while other co-productions with Cuba, Poland and the United States are scheduled to be staged.

The Cuba-US co-production, Ana en el Trópico (Ana in the Tropics), is also included on the Havana theater fiesta program in which the Cuban theater company Teatro El Público and FUNDarte from the USA are involved. Another Cuba-US production is El caso de la luna (The Case of the Moon) by Artefactus Cultural

China is the only Asian country on hand at the festival with the play Thunderstorm by Fijiam’s Arts Theater Company.
