Trinidad and Tobago mourns death of runner Deon Lendore

Havana, January 12 (RHC)-- The Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee mourns the death of runner Deon Lendore, Olympic and world medalist, in a traffic accident on Monday night in Texas, United States.

"Words cannot adequately express our sadness at the devastating and untimely loss of three-time Olympic and world bronze medalist Deon Lendore, who has been an inspiration and motivation to all of us on and off the track," the entity said in a statement.

Three-time Olympian, the sprinter won the bronze medal in the 4×400 relay at the London 2012 Games and a year later finished third in the 400 meters and long relay at the World Indoor Championships in Portland, United States.

In addition, he won the silver medal in the 4×400m relay at the Beijing 2015 world meet and in 2019 he ran the first leg of the 4×400m that gave gold to Trinidad and Tobago at the World Relays in Yokohama (Japan).

He was born in Mount Hope on October 28, 1992 and after starting his sports career in the local Abilene Wildcats club he traveled to the United States thanks to a scholarship at Texas A&M University.

A world champion in junior categories, in 2011 he participated in the senior World Championships in Daegu and at the age of 19 he made his Olympic debut in London.  He then competed in Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2021.
