Cuba loses to Mexico in Pan American Volleyball Cup

Havana, August 23 (JIT) -- The Cuban team lost to Mexico in four sets (26-24, 16-25, 16-25, 18-25) during the second day of the XIX Women's Pan American Volleyball Cup Hermosillo 2022, held at the Arena Sonora.

After this result, the women are in third place in Group B with a 1-1 record, behind the hosts, who have two successes, as well as Colombia, 3-0 victims of Canada, who suffered their second setback.

On Tuesday, the opponents of the West Indians will be the Nicaraguans, who accumulated a defeat suffered on Sunday against the locals.

Against the Cubans, who never found the winning formula again, Mexico came from behind to win thanks to a more organized and effective game with which they secured advantages of 50-40 in attack, 13-9 in blocking and 7-5 in service. They also gave away fewer points due to their own errors (22-29).

Once again the lanky opposite Dezirett Madan led the Caribbean offense with 13 points per attack, followed by corner player Sulian Matienzo with 11 (5-2-4), the only ones with double digits.

On the opposing side, Samantha Bricio was unstoppable, whose leadership was decisive with 22 points (19-2-1). The support of corner attackers Aime Topete (13) and Grecia Castro (11) was also vital.

In Group A, the Dominican Republic and the United States won their second victories by sweeping Peru and Puerto Rico, respectively.

This competition grants Norceca teams two slots for the Pan American Games of Santiago 2023. The Dominican Republic and Mexico have already qualified.
