Haiti registers 1,941 deaths after 7.2 magnitude earthquake

​Among the solemn expressions, the country's flag will fly at half-mast during the days of mourning.​

Port-au-Prince, August 18 (RHC)-- Haiti's Civil Protection reported Tuesday that after three days of intense rescue work, the Caribbean country reports 1,941 deaths due to the 7.2 magnitude earthquake last Saturday.

According to national authorities, at the moment more than 9,900 people have been injured in the departments of South, Nippes and Grand'Anse, at the same time, they indicated that thousands of people are still missing.

In Port-au-Prince, the Haitian capital, the prime minister's office reiterated that more rescue personnel have been enabled to intensify the search and care operations.  "Several rescuers and those who are there to provide medical care have already been enabled."

Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry has decreed three days of national mourning in honor of the memory of the victims of the earthquake.  "We want to show respect for the people who died (...) the humanitarian situation is very concerning."
