Tegucigalpa, November 21 (teleSUR-RHC)-- Honduran Secretary of Security Arturo Corrales officially confirmed the new successor to the former National Police Director Jose Ramon Sabillon who was removed from his position on Thursday because of an “international mission” to the United Nations that was assigned to him by the Honduran President.

Sabillon had previously been in charge of the murder case of the beauty contestant Maria Alvarado and her sister.

However, during a press conference held late Thursday evening, Corrales announced that the Honduras Police Commissioner Felix Villanueva Mejia, will be named the new director. Corrales went on to note that the announcement was made following inaccurate media reports regarding the details of the potential candidate.

During the event, Mejia issued a statement in which he guaranteed to fulfill his professional and legal duties as the country’s new police chief.

After rumors that the resignation of Sabillon was connected to a police rebellion or even the beginning of a coup attempt, National Police spokesperson, Edgardo Barahona, dissipated those versions saying no such circumstance exists.

The spokesperson's statement is in response to news reports that all high-ranking military officials were confined to barracks and that Corrales had given this order after four people were arrested for the murder of beauty contestant Maria Alvarado and her sister.

This case drew international attention and national outrage, due to the serious feminine homicides crisis in Honduras, which is today the most violent country in the world with a rate of 91 murders per 100,000 inhabitants.
