A report published on Wednesday by the Mexican newspaper La Jornada, cited figures from The Institute for Women in Migration.
Alejandro Solalinde, a priest and director of a shelter for migrants in Oaxaca, Hermanos en el Camino, also told the newspaper that at least 10,000 Central American migrants are reportedly missing, although other estimates put that number more like 70,000.
According to civil society organizations, every year 400,000 undocumented migrants cross the southern border into Mexico, most of them to try to reach the United States.
Earlier this year, the Mexican government established a special investigative unit to track down thousands of people who have gone missing in the country.
