Havana, Jan 24 (RHC)--The Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP) and Cuban authorities celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Julio Antonio Mella International Camp on Monday, where some 102,000 visitors have stayed in solidarity with the island.

The ceremony was held in memory of the historic leader of the Revolution, Fidel Castro, whose initiative led to the creation of the Center in 1972, with the contribution of young people from 28 countries and Cuba.

According to an ICAP press release, the Friendship Medal was awarded to the Danish activist Inge Hogh, who has expressed solidarity with the Caribbean nation for more than 40 years.

The president of the Institute, Fernando González, highlighted the dream and the political projection of Fidel Castro.

"The fraternity and solidarity of the Cuban people with the poor of the world and the human warmth in the center, represented first of all by its excellent staff, have motivated to repeat the visit of many friends, including the mortal remains of some of them rest in the camp by their express request," he stressed.

After two years of the recess to operate as a Covid-19 enter, the Camp received the 5th Anténor Firmin Brigade from Haiti this month. Other groups from different countries are preparing to restart their visits.

According to ICAP, the Camp was created to provide a space where solidarity activists from other nations could have a temporary base to develop volunteer work programs in agricultural areas, exchanges with authorities, academics, and the population, and visits to historical sites.
