Cuban Vice President Calls on Sugar Industry to Stabilize Operations With High Yields

Guantánamo, December 30 (RHC)-- Industrial and agricultural workers in Guantanamo province and in the rest of the nation today received a call from Jose Ramon Machado Ventura, the Second Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba and vice president of the nation, to apply themselves to obtaining good results in the recently initiated sugar harvest. Guantanamo is Cuba's Easternmost province and is traditionally a high yield sugar cane producer.

Vice President Machado in Guantanamo is heading a session of the Provincial government to reviewed the the economy and the progress of the sugar harvest.

The Cuban leader pointed to the fact that grinding has not yet reached optimal levels he also urged an increase in the planting of new fields and more attention to the newly cut plantations to ensure on adequate recovery for future harvests.

Also present at the meeting was Cuba's Comptroller General, Gladys Bejerano, and the First Secretary of the Communist Party in the province, Dennis Legrá.

The year end meeting in Guantanamo province also reviewed the increase in Local Initiative Economic projects, some of which have been highly successor and several local institutions have reported multi-million dollar revenues.

Exports have been diversified, including shipments of sawdust for Italy, coconut fibers for Germany and arts and craft for Latin America.
