Havana, October 4 (RHC) – Real Madrid defeated Villarreal 3-1 today and temporarily climbed to first place in the Spanish Football League.

Brazilian Vinicius opened the scoring in the 47th minute and then doubled the lead in the 69th minute with a penalty.

Villarreal pulled one back in the 73rd minute through Georges Mikautadze, but were reduced to a man down after defender Santiago Mouriño was sent off (double yellow card) in the 78th minute.

The Merengues took advantage of the expulsion and scored again in the 81st minute, this time with a goal from Frenchman Kylian Mbappé, the tournament’s leading scorer.

With those three points, Madrid reached 21 points and moved to the top of the competition, two points ahead of Barcelona (19), who visit Sevilla tomorrow.

Also on Saturday, Athletic Bilbao beat Mallorca 2-1, Girona led Valencia by the same score, and Levante defeated Oviedo 2-0.
