Havana, October 10 (RHC) – Paraguay will host the 2031 Pan American Games after its capital city beat out the Brazilian cities of Rio de Janeiro and Niterói, Panam Sports reported today.
The vote at an extraordinary general assembly of the Pan American sports organization held this Friday in Santiago, Chile, fell in favor of Asunción, 28 votes to 24.
This will be the first time that the hemisphere’s premier multi-sport event will be held in the South American nation, which successfully hosted the Pan American Youth Games this year.
Paraguayan President Santiago Peña celebrated the achievement and emphasized that his country is “rising again and showing its greatness to the world.”
“2031 will find us united, proud, and ready to show the world the strength and passion of our people!” the president expressed in a message on social media.
The Paraguayan capital had lost the previous election to Lima, which will host the Games in 2027.
The initial budget is more than $350 million, an amount that does not include the new athletes’ village, which is part of a government housing initiative designed for long-term use and will be built through a public-private partnership.
