Call to recruit young people into solidarity organizations

by Ed Newman

Young Cuban congressman Elián González has called for the recruitment of young people into solidarity organizations.

Elian Gonzalez spoke at the IX Latin American and Caribbean Continental Meeting of Solidarity with Cuba, held in Mexico City with the attendance of 500 delegates from thirty nations.

Elián is a symbol of the strength of the solidarity movement, led by Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro, which fought tirelessly until he was returned to his homeland when he was a child kidnapped by the Miami mafia.

The young man, who received an emotional welcome by the delegates, emphasized: “It is necessary to give continuity to this great Movement of Solidarity with Cuba, to incorporate young people into organizations to strengthen them and for them to take up the defense of the Cuban Revolution on social media.”

He emphasized that Cuban youth have always been the essence of the Revolution, and evoked Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro, “that man to whom I owe so much, to whom I owe not only the love of my people, but also the solidarity and support of you,” he said.

The delegates also exchanged with Mijaín López, five-time Olympic champion, who expressed: “Everything I did was for my country; in Cuba, no one will stop us, for our unity and principles, following Fidel’s legacy.”

He spoke of his exceptional athletic career: “You can achieve anything, you just have to believe, have discipline and dedication. My motto has always been: a cool head, a warm heart,” he affirmed, receiving a standing ovation.

Regarding the culminating moment when he achieved his fifth Olympic title, he recalled that he insisted on participating with the intention of honoring Cuba, where the support of the Revolution lies not only in the athletes, but also in the doctors, teachers and training processes of all, he said.

The three-day IX Continental Meeting concluded on Sunday with the goal of strengthening, multiplying, and coordinating actions in support of Cuba, for friendship and against imperialism.
