Israel orders suspension of aid deliveries to Gaza

by Ed Newman

Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered the suspension of aid deliveries to the Gaza Strip, alleging the Palestinian Hamas resistance movement had violated the ceasefire.

Israel’s KAN public broadcaster, citing unnamed political sources, said that Netanyahu ordered the suspension of humanitarian aid deliveries to Gaza on Sunday upon the recommendation of unnamed Israeli forces.

In a statement released on Saturday, Netanyahu’s office announced that the Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt will remain closed “until further notice”, emphasized that its reopening is contingent upon Hamas fulfilling its obligations as per the ceasefire deal, including the return of all dead captives and the implementation of the agreed-upon framework.

Hamas warned earlier that the closure of the Rafah crossing between Egypt and Gaza would cause significant delays in the handover of the remaining captives’ bodies. Also, Israeli forces allege Hamas is carrying out missile attacks and gunfire against the Israeli forces stationed in the southern city of Rafah.

Hamas has denied carrying out any attacks, reiterating its commitment to the US-brokered ceasefire deal with Tel Aviv.

Meantime, Israeli forces have violated the ceasefire agreement 47 times since it started on October 10, killing at least 38 Palestinians and injuring 143 others. The closing of the border follows Israeli attacks that killed at least 16 Palestinians in Gaza.

Israel has violated the Gaza ceasefire 47 times since the truce came into effect in early October, officials say.

Authorities in Gaza called on the United Nations and the guarantor parties to the agreement to “intervene urgently to compel the occupation to end its ongoing aggression and protect unarmed civilians,” the statement added.

US President Donald Trump proposed the ceasefire deal based on a phased plan, which included the release of Israeli captives in exchange for Palestinian prisoners and detainees as the first step for the resumption of peace.

The Israeli regime’s genocidal war against the innocent Palestinians in Gaza has left some 68,200 people dead and more than 170,200 others injured since October 2023, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.
