Cuba expresses support for Colombian President Gustavo Petro

by Ed Newman

Cuban authorities expressed their support for Colombian President Gustavo Petro in the face of recent statements by the U.S. government accusing him of being a leader of illegal drug trafficking.

Miguel Díaz-Canel, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Party of Cuba (PCC) and President of the Republic, expressed his support for Petro in a message on X and assured that the peoples of Our America stand with Colombia.

“We reject the interference and fallacies of the United States government, which is attempting to reimpose the Monroe Doctrine in its relations with the sovereign nations of Latin America and the Caribbean,” he emphasized.

For his part, Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, Cuban Minister of Foreign Affairs, stated on the same social media platform that the US government’s statements constitute a threat to Colombian sovereignty and seek to interfere in the nation’s internal affairs.

The accusations were made by U.S. President Donald Trump through his Truth Social platform, where he also announced the suspension of payments and subsidies from his country to Colombia.

Hours earlier, Gustavo Petro accused the United States of murdering 40-year-old Colombian fisherman Alejandro Carranza on the high seas and violating his country’s sovereignty.
