President Maduro requests to withdraw Venezuelan nationality from extremist Leopoldo López

by Ed Newman

The president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, formally requested this Friday before the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ) the withdrawal of nationality from far-right opponent Leopoldo López, accusing him of promoting a military invasion and the economic blockade.

The legal action is based on article 130 of the Constitution and the Libertador Simón Bolívar Organic Law. The appeal presented by the Venezuelan Executive maintains that López incurred a “grotesque, criminal and illegal call for military invasion.”

The Foreign Ministry and the Administrative Service for Identification, Migration and Immigration (SAIME) will immediately proceed, in accordance with the relevant procedures, to annul López’s passport. The Venezuelan State affirmed that it has sufficient resources to guarantee the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Republic against foreign powers and those willing to undermine national independence.

Likewise, the Government argues that the opponent has permanently promoted the economic and financial blockade against the nation, in addition to requesting interventions in complicity with foreign actors that undermine national independence.

As part of the procedure, the Executive instructed the Foreign Ministry and the Administrative Service for Identification, Migration and Immigration (Saime) to begin the annulment of López’s passport. The Venezuelan State ratified that it has the resources to guarantee the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Republic.

The president’s request occurs in the context of recent statements by López. In an interview with the Spanish agency EFE, the leader supported a possible US attack on Venezuelan soil.

The far-right Leopoldo López, a fugitive from justice and convicted for his responsibility in the violent actions known as “guarimbas” in 2014, once again called for a potential military intervention by the United States against Venezuela from Madrid. López declared that Washington’s pressure should not be limited to maritime operations in the Caribbean, but rather “that can advance to objectives within the national territory.”

These statements align with the growing hostility of Donald Trump’s Government towards Caracas, which has reactivated its “fight against drug trafficking” speech to justify military operations. López has a long history of promoting coup actions and clandestinely fled to Spain in October 2020, evading his criminal sentence. In January 2025, the Public Ministry requested a Red Alert from Interpol against López for promoting military intervention.
