The member governments of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA) have decided to suspend the incoming, far-right government that will be installed in the Plurinational State of Bolivia by the representative of the Christian Democratic Party, Rodrigo Paz, elected in the general elections held in the Andean country last Sunday, October 19. The measure was taken because his “anti-Bolivarian, anti-Latin American, pro-imperialist, and colonialist” conduct is contrary to the Alliance’s founding principles.

This decision was announced by Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yván Gil through his social media accounts, emphasizing that the suspension seeks to protect the Alliance’s principles of unity, sovereignty, and social justice. This stance will be maintained while the political conditions in Bolivia are evaluated ahead of the peaceful inauguration, which is scheduled for November 8.

The regional bloc described the public statements made by figures from the next far-right government against member nations such as Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua as “totally unacceptable.” ALBA believes that these positions disregard the principles of respect, sovereignty, and cooperation that underpin the integration of the peoples of Our America.

The ALBA statement was emphatic in differentiating the political suspension from popular ties: “This suspension does not affect the permanent, emotional, and supportive ties we maintain with the Bolivian people.” The Alliance countries reaffirmed their commitment to continue working alongside the population, defending their rights and well-being.

The ALBA governments recalled the profound support provided to the Bolivian people since the group’s formation, highlighting historic achievements in health and education. These include the literacy of more than one million people through popular education programs and the care of more than three million Bolivians through the Miracle Mission and other health programs.

In addition to social achievements, the bloc mentioned significant investments in various sectors of the Bolivian economy and a prominent international presence, defending Latin American unity. “Thanks to this Alliance, the voice of the Bolivian people has resonated strongly in Our America and around the world,” the statement emphasized.

The ALBA nations reiterated their commitment that the Alliance will continue to be a space for solidarity, cooperation, and justice, asserting that this suspension is necessary to ensure that the organization remains an instrument of unity and social justice for all the peoples of Our America.

The Alliance seeks to protect its founding principles in the face of Paz’s statements regarding members such as Venezuela, Cuba, and Nicaragua.

The suspension of the incoming government seeks to ensure that the bloc continues to be an instrument of unity and social justice in the region.
