Activist Ivón Guerra, a member of the board of directors of the José Martí Association of Cuban Residents in Mexico, highlighted today the rejection by 165 nations at the UN of the blockade imposed by the United States on the island.
“Despite the immense pressure exerted by the United States using undiplomatic methods, the government of that country could not prevent the condemnation by 165 countries of the world for this genocidal blockade that it is illegally applying to the Cuban people,” she said in an interview with Prensa Latina.
She believes that Cuba “has won overwhelmingly” and “is standing firm and resisting.”
The vote, held annually since 1992 at the United Nations General Assembly, took place yesterday amid a strong US pressure campaign on other countries to change their stance of support for the Caribbean nation.
This time, 165 nations (including Mexico) voted in favor of lifting the embargo, seven voted against, and 12 abstained.
According to Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez, speaking at the UN, the island will not give up and will continue to denounce the infamy and injustice of the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by Washington for more than six decades.
According to the most recent data, the embargo caused an estimated $7.5561 billion in damages between March 2024 and February of this year, a 49 percent increase compared to the previous period.
Considered the main obstacle to Cuba’s development, in the health sector alone this policy resulted in losses of almost 300 million dollars in one year, while the impact in the energy sector exceeded 496 million due to restrictions on importing fuels and spare parts.
