The Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) has described as “unworthy” the offer of aid from U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio to the victims of Hurricane Melissa, citing his lack of sincerity while the blockade persists.
The PCC’s Secretary of Organization, Roberto Morales, questioned the legitimacy of Rubio’s offer on social media and emphasized that, if there were a genuine desire to support the Cuban people, the U.S. government would have unconditionally lifted the economic, commercial, and financial blockade that has caused substantial damage to the country for more than six decades.
He also demanded the definitive removal of Cuba from the unilateral list of State sponsors of terrorism, “where we should never have been,” he emphasized.
Cuba contacted the U.S. State Department on Thursday to inquire about its announced willingness to assist the Caribbean nation following Hurricane Melissa, reported Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos Fernández de Cossío.
“Following today’s public communications regarding the hurricane damage, we have contacted the State Department and are awaiting clarification on how and in what way they are prepared to help,” he wrote in X.
Melissa made landfall in Cuba the previous day in the southeastern part of the country, causing severe flooding and extensive damage to homes and crops in the eastern provinces.
To date, no deaths have been reported as a result of the hurricane.
