Solidarity aid for Cuba in aftermath of Hurricane Melissa

With the conviction that “once again we will move forward, once again we will recover,” the member of the Political Bureau and Prime Minister, Manuel Marrero Cruz, sent, from this nation, “a warm greeting to the entire nation, to all the people of Cuba,” who have endured very difficult times following Hurricane Melissa.

After being received by His Royal Highness Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince and Prime Minister of the Kingdom, the Head of Government made statements on the topics discussed, primarily regarding the expressions of solidarity received and the resounding victory in the vote against the blockade.

The meeting revealed the Saudi Prime Minister’s willingness “to send significant aid to contribute to the recovery from the damage caused by the hurricane.”

Marrero Cruz stated that he and His Royal Highness “shared two moments: one of great joy and one of sadness.” The first, he said, was the result of the vote in the United Nations General Assembly, where the international community once again spoke out against the blockade.

“Once again, justice has been served; once again, the world stands with Cuba, achieving 165 votes in favor. It is a great show of international support, despite the pressure from the United States government. It truly is a victory not only for Cuba, but a victory for the world,” he emphasized.

The Prime Minister expressed that the moment of sadness came when he informed Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud about the cyclone’s passage and the consequences it has had on key sectors, such as housing, agriculture, and social impact projects. “He offered us his full solidarity and support, and indicated that he will meet with members of his cabinet to agree on significant aid for our country.”

He also noted that during his meeting yesterday with Gustavo Petro, the president of Colombia, Petro told him that ships would immediately depart from his country to provide rice, electrical transformers, and other supplies to aid the recovery process.

Marrero Cruz, who, along with a delegation from Cuba, is participating in the Ninth Future Investment Initiative Forum—which represents a strategic opportunity for Cuba to explore new avenues for economic growth—indicated that the mission will continue, but “as soon as we return, we will join the recovery efforts.” He also acknowledged the resilience of the heroic Cuban people.

Finally, he reiterated that “we will stand with the people in this process of achieving a resounding victory in the recovery, not only by restoring things to the way they were before, but by striving to make them even better.”
