Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, President of the National Defense Council, today recognized members of the Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces (MINFAR) and the Ministry of the Interior (MININT) for their work in rescue operations following severe flooding caused by Hurricane Melissa in eastern Cuba.
In a message posted on his official Twitter account, the president praised the dedication and courage of those who, with “admirable skill and undeniable heroism,” rescued thousands of people trapped by floodwaters and the intense rains associated with the storm.
“Our deepest gratitude goes to the MINFAR and MININT combatants who, with admirable skill and undeniable heroism, are rescuing thousands of compatriots trapped by the floods caused by Melissa during its devastating passage through eastern Cuba,” Díaz-Canel wrote.
Since the impact of the hurricane, specialized forces from both ministries have been carrying out rescue operations, relocating residents to safe areas, and providing logistical support to isolated communities, in close coordination with Civil Defense and local governments, according to Cuban media reports.
Hurricane Melissa caused significant damage in several eastern provinces, affecting homes, roads, and basic services. Authorities are constantly monitoring the situation and have reiterated that the priority is preserving human life and advancing the recovery efforts.
