Brazilian police arrest former president Jair Bolsonaro for violations of his conviction

The Brazilian Federal Police arrested former president Jair Bolsonaro preventively this Saturday, carrying out an order issued by the Supreme Federal Court of the South American country.

A group of agents arrived at Bolsonaro’s residence in Brasília and arrested the far-right leader, who was then taken to the Federal Police headquarters in Brasília.

TV Globo learned that the expectation is that Bolsonaro will be held in a “state room,” a space reserved for high-ranking officials such as presidents and other prominent public figures.

When Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Michel Temer were arrested, they were held in Federal Police cells in São Paulo and Curitiba (PR), respectively.

The Federal Police reported, through an official statement, that they were complying with a preventive detention order issued by the Supreme Federal Court (STF).

Since August 4, the 70-year-old far-right leader had been under house arrest at his home in Brasília for failing to comply with a series of precautionary measures established in his case.

According to local media, Saturday’s pretrial detention does not mark the beginning of his sentence, as had been anticipated for the following weeks after the Supreme Court dismissed the first appeals against the ruling.
