Cuba commemorates 9th anniversary of Fidel Castro’s passing

by Ed Newman

The Cuban government and people honor Fidel Castro, considered by millions of citizens to be the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, on the ninth anniversary of his death.

As in previous years, the University of Havana will host a political and cultural event, which will serve as the main tribute to the man who led the revolutionary movement on the island that, on January 1, 1959, ousted dictator Fulgencio Batista from power.

Organized by the Federation of University Students, the tribute on the university steps is just one of the events planned, with the same purpose, in almost every corner of Cuba.

Also on Tuesday, the legacy of Fidel Castro is being commemorated at Casa de las Américas here in Havana through a discussion among creators and intellectuals organized by several institutions and organizations, including the Cuban chapter of the Network of Intellectuals, Artists, and Social Movements in Defense of Humanity.

According to the announcement, the event at this Havana institution will feature the online participation of renowned intellectuals from around the world who were close friends of Fidel Castro.

The human and historical significance of his thought and governance, as well as the enduring relevance of his legacy in Cuba, will be the subject of reflection.

From Pinar del Río to Guantánamo, on the Isle of Youth, and at Cuban diplomatic missions, the tribute to Fidel, as he is commonly known in Cuba, began earlier than scheduled.

Examples of this include the tributes to his legacy at the recent 9th International Agroecology Meeting and at the national volunteer work day last Saturday, as well as the “Light of Dawn” discussion at the José Martí Memorial in Havana.

Official missions have issued numerous reports of programs commemorating him, including the Cuban Embassy in Belgium, whose members planted a “tree in homage to the historical leader of the Cuban Revolution,” according to a statement from the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The commemoration even transcends Cuban borders, as prominent figures and organizations from various nations highlight his ideas.

One example is the inauguration of a Natural Sciences Museum, named after Fidel Castro, at the state-run Casimiro Sotelo National University in Nicaragua.

According to the Cuban Collaborative Encyclopedia EcuRed, Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz, better known as Fidel Castro (Birán, Holguín, August 13, 1926 – Havana, Cuba, November 25, 2016), spearheaded and led the Cuban people’s struggle for the consolidation of the revolutionary process, their advance toward Socialism, and the unity of the revolutionary forces and the entire population.

Furthermore, he led “the country’s economic and social transformations, the development of education, health, sports, culture, and science, as well as the confrontation of external aggression and the conduct of an active, principled foreign policy.”

With fewer words, however, many Cubans describe or characterize him, for whom he rests in the Santa Ifigenia Heritage Cemetery and, at the same time, lives on in every war to vindicate or safeguard the nation.
