by Ed Newman

Cuban students gathered Thursday on the steps of the University of Havana to pay tribute to the memory of the eight medical students executed by Spanish colonialism in 1871.

The event was attended by the nation’s president, Miguel Díaz-Canel, other members of the Political Bureau, and representatives of mass and social organizations, as well as medical students, who marched from the university to the monument erected on Havana’s Malecón.

“On November 27, 1871, 154 years ago, eight medical students were taken from life on false charges, deprived of a promising future, their noble aspirations, and the simple right to live, in a crime that cast a shadow over our island,” Thalía Morell stated in her keynote address on behalf of the Federation of University Students.

The commemoration reaffirms that those unjustly accused young men are an example of dignity and remain alive in the hearts of current generations.

It also serves as a historical lesson and a reaffirmation of the principles of Cuban society, underscoring its enduring commitment to its historical legacy and the formation of patriotic values in its youth.
