Cuba thanks European Union for humanitarian aid following Hurricane Melissa

by Ed Newman

Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, Cuba’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, today thanked the European Union (EU) for its willingness to send and deliver humanitarian aid to those affected by Hurricane Melissa in eastern Cuba.

In a message posted on the social network X, the Cuban Foreign Minister highlighted that the European support is bolstering the recovery efforts being carried out by the Cuban government in the areas affected by the storm at the end of October.

“We thank the European Union for its willingness to send and deliver humanitarian aid to those affected by Hurricane Melissa in eastern #Cuba. Their support aids the recovery efforts that our government is carrying out in the affected areas.”

Bruno Rodriguez posted images of a 40-foot container leaving Belgium with medical supplies, medical equipment, and basic clinical and hospital furniture to help restore lost capacity in hospitals in the provinces of Granma, Santiago de Cuba, and Holguín.

According to the Cuban Embassy in Belgium and the EU, this donation was coordinated by the diplomatic mission with the solidarity of Belgian donor Adriano Fernández, the solidarity group Cubanismo.be, and the companies Nirint Shipping and BDC Intl. S.A., as well as the Sans Frontière Hospital.

The EU’s solidarity, highlighted in various national and international media outlets, complements the country’s efforts to address the urgent needs of the affected communities, strengthening cooperation and support during this particularly difficult time.

After making landfall on October 29, Hurricane Melissa caused severe damage to infrastructure and homes in several eastern provinces, where immediate assistance and rehabilitation efforts are underway.
