Cuba denounced the double standards of the United States before the United Nations Security Council on Tuesday, after the US designated the Venezuelan government as a foreign terrorist organization.

The Permanent Representative of Cuba to the UN, Ernesto Soberón Guzmán, emphasized at the forum:

“What moral authority does the US government have to make these designations when it protects and finances terrorist organizations on its own territory, refuses to cooperate with neighboring countries like Cuba on matters of terrorism, and speaks openly of covert CIA actions and sabotage against Venezuelan infrastructure?”

The Cuban diplomat described the measure against Caracas as “arbitrary, fraudulent, unilateral, and politically motivated,” adding:

“It is hypocritical that the country with the world’s largest drug market, from whose territory this criminal business is financed, is promoting a war supposedly to combat this scourge in Latin America and the Caribbean.”

Regarding the Trump Administration’s harassment of Venezuela, the Cuban representative noted that “the irresponsible actions of the U.S. government seem to know no bounds,” as it “imposes the application of the law outside its territory and far from its shores, where it has no jurisdiction, using assault and the appropriation of property.”

“The U.S. government disrespects and gravely violates international law, the established regime of the law of the sea, freedom of navigation and commerce, and the Convention for the Suppression of Unlawful Acts against the Safety of Maritime Navigation,” he stated.

Soberón also stated that the new U.S. National Security Strategy, “which includes the so-called Trump corollary to the Monroe Doctrine,” aims to “enforce the idea that the Western Hemisphere is its exclusive sphere of influence, validates the dangerous doctrine of peace through strength, and enshrines cognitive warfare as state policy.”

“The big stick policy and gunboat diplomacy, with their criminal record of aggression and abuses against our peoples, belong to our region’s past. We cannot allow it to be the future,” the diplomat said.

He pointed out that, therefore, with its actions, the current U.S. administration “is violating the principles of the proclamation of Latin America and the Caribbean as a zone of peace.”

“We reiterate our call to the international community to halt this escalation against a sovereign state,” he emphasized.
