Venezuela’s interim president, Delcy Rodríguez, expressed her gratitude on Monday for the message from Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, who conveyed his condolences to the Venezuelan people for the heroes who died during the US military aggression and the kidnapping of President Nicolás Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores on January 3.

“Yesterday I spoke with the President of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, and the first thing he conveyed to me were his heartfelt condolences to the Venezuelan people, the families and friends of our heroes and heroines who died in combat on January 3,” said the acting president during the first Federal Government Council meeting of 2026.

She added, “I also reciprocated those condolences, because 32 Cuban heroes died, but they died for Venezuela, for the concept of unity. For feeling like sons and daughters of the greater homeland.”

“I thank them for the call, because knowing we are united in the just causes of Latin America encourages us. It strengthens our self-esteem as Venezuelans and helps us to continue together in this process of unity among the peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean,” she reaffirmed.

She sent a message “to those who have a different concept of hegemony, through means other than diplomacy and dialogue,” and stated: “We are in a process of dialogue with the United States to address the differences and difficulties, both the most sensitive and the less sensitive, through diplomacy.”

On January 3, 2026, US military forces kidnapped President Nicolás Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores in an illegal military aggression that included bombings of several locations, in which dozens of Venezuelan military personnel and civilians lost their lives along with Cuban fighters who joined in the defense of Venezuela’s sovereignty.
