The Russian ambassador to Venezuela, Sergey Melik-Bagdasarov, has denounced that the United States is resorting to unfair practices to expel unwanted Russian and international businesses from the South American country.
According to the Russian diplomat, US actions are based on economic and financial limitations and extraterritorial sanctions that the US applies in violation of international law.
Melik-Bagdasarov asserted that the objective of US actions is none other than to expel Russian and other “undesirable” foreign participants from the Venezuelan market and, through unfair competition, clear the space for structures under Washington’s control.
He added that US officials openly acknowledge this policy and do not conceal it in their public statements.
The Russian diplomat stated that “certain projects are forced to adapt to the pressure of the sanctions,” with adjustments to deadlines and work formats that are not related to the US attack on Venezuela in early January.
Melik-Bagdasarov asserted that despite US pressure, Russian companies and businesses will not renounce their obligations and will maintain their presence and cooperation with their Venezuelan partners.
On January 3, the United States carried out a military attack against Venezuela, kidnapping President Nicolás Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores, who were taken to New York to be tried for alleged drug trafficking offenses.
Since then, the US has pressured Venezuela to negotiate an agenda for unfreezing Venezuelan funds and selling the country’s crude oil, as well as engaging in diplomatic dialogue.
Interim President Delcy Rodríguez has stated on several occasions that her government is committed to the “path of diplomacy” with Washington to protect the country and the Venezuelan people.
