NCBL CONDEMNS THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION’S UNLAWFUL ACTIONS TO CHOKE THE LIFE OUT OF CUBA!
National Conference of Black Lawyers (NCBL) joins the chorus of voices of organizations, including National Network on Cuba (NNOC), American Association of Jurists (AAJ), December 12th Movement (D12), and International Association of Democratic Lawyers (IADL), decrying the heightened militaristic threats and unprovoked attacks on nations in the Caribbean, most notably Venezuela and the threatened attack on Cuba. The terms of the most recent executive order imposing tariffs on countries that supply oil and fuel to Cuba infringes on the exercise of their sovereignty. These actions by the U.S. government violate international law including Article 2 of the United Nations Charter that mandates respect for the sovereign equality of states (nations) and Article 1, the self-determination of peoples.
The inhumane blockade against Cuba was initiated by the U.S. following the successful overthrow of the U.S. supported Batista government ending the use of Cuba by the rich in and outside of Cuba as their playground, most notably the United States’ 1%. The successful Cuban revolution created a Socialist Society under the leadership of the Communist Party of Cuba. It focuses on qualitatively improving the lives of the Cuban people, from ending illiteracy in 1960 to providing quality education and health care for all in Cuba.
There have been no aggressions by Cuba against other countries, much less the United States, since the Cuban Revolution. Indeed, Cuba has had to defend itself against attacks by the United States. Rather than being a threat to other countries, Cuba has provided critical health care to nations around the world facing natural disasters or other crises. These unfounded threats against Cuba thinly mask the attempt to force a regime change which is violative of the U.N. Charter, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. But the Trump Administration knows this and doesn’t care!
Lies are the hallmark of President Trump and his administration. Lies that feed on the ingrained “anti-communism” developed to protect the capitalist economic system that puts profits before people. This coincides with Trump embracing, advancing and exploiting the engrained White supremacist perspective that devalues Black people and people of color. Trump and those in his administration are feeding these lies and banking on the silence of those who may, unwittingly or not, support these lies as the truth or, those who are too comfortable or afraid to raise their voices in unison with the brave, committed justice warriors who say NO!!
NCBL challenges its members, allies and those standing on the sidelines to raise their voices and say NO!!
NCBL challenges its members, allies and those standing on the sidelines to join “Hands Off Cuba” actions in their cities and states that are visibly and loudly opposing this race-based, imperialistic cacophony of lies being spewed in Presidential Executive Orders and other official documents to justify even more stringent restrictions on trade with Cuba – the intent of which is to choke the life out of Cuba and its people – to return it to the control of those who held it as a playground for the 1%.
NCBL urges the U.N. Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, to demand the United States respect the U.N. Charter, including the non-intervention and non-interference in the affairs of sovereign states (nations) and their freedom to engage in international trade and navigation.
NCBL joins the growing national and international solidarity denouncing this veiled attempt to overthrow Cuba!
NCBL joins with those saying NO TO THE U.S. ATTACKS ON CUBA!!
