Lula defends Global South unity to break colonial dependence

by Ed Newman

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva defended the unity of the Global South this Sunday, February 22, to transform the world economy. Before traveling to South Korea, he stated that developing nations must negotiate as a bloc with the superpowers to avoid losses.

According to Lula, the world maintains a technological and economic colonial logic that can only be broken through cooperation between countries with similar challenges.

Lula emphasized that the BRICS are fundamental to making this new economic order viable. He affirmed that the group is no longer marginalized and now has its own tools, such as its bank, to strengthen its autonomy. The Brazilian leader clarified that they are not seeking a new Cold War, but rather greater integration into global organizations to balance the power of traditional centers.

Regarding financial decolonization, the Brazilian president reiterated the importance of trading in local currencies to reduce dependence on the dollar. He explained that this measure aims to lower costs and operational risks for emerging economies without the need for direct confrontation.

For Lula, it is time for the Global South to process its own resources, such as critical minerals, instead of only exporting raw materials.

In foreign policy, he reaffirmed his support for multilateralism and a United Nations (UN) with greater legitimacy and capacity for action. He criticized unilateral interventions in countries like Venezuela and Palestine, demanding respect for national sovereignty.

The Brazilian president insisted that no country should act above international law, advocating for a system that guarantees global peace and harmony.

Regarding the relationship with Donald Trump, Lula stated that he hopes to discuss whether the U.S. role in South America will be one of help or threat. He emphasized that the region is a zone of peace that prioritizes economic growth and job creation under a framework of respect. He also offered to cooperate against transnational organized crime as long as Washington demonstrates a genuine and non-interventionist interest.

Finally, Lula da Silva described his visit to India as successful and highlighted the optimism of investors regarding Brazilian development. The president will continue his tour in South Korea to sign a strategic action plan through 2029. With this initiative, Brazil seeks to consolidate its position as a leader promoting a sovereign agenda to eradicate hunger and violence worldwide.
