Cuba announces arrival in Havana of Mexican Navy ship with humanitarian aid

by Ed Newman

Cuban Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Josefina Vidal confirmed this Saturday the entry into Havana Bay of a Mexican Navy ship carrying humanitarian aid sent by the government and people of Mexico for the people of Cuba.

Through her account on the social network X, the Deputy Foreign Minister of Cuba welcomed the arrival of the ship, which is part of the response announced by Mexico amidst a complex context for the island, characterized by the tightening of the economic embargo and energy persecution imposed by the United States.

“At this moment, a Mexican Navy ship is entering Havana with aid from the government and the brotherly people of #Mexico for the people of #Cuba,” Vidal wrote in her post, while also thanking Mexico for its gesture of solidarity.

The Papaloapan and Huasteco ships, of the Mexican Navy, set sail from the port of Veracruz on Tuesday, according to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This action was carried out following the instructions of Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum.

The ARM Papaloapan, it was added, is carrying 1,078 tons of beans and powdered milk, which are essential food items; meanwhile, the ARM Huasteco is transporting 92 tons of beans and 23 tons of other food products.

The Mexican government supported several social organizations in delivering 23 tons of humanitarian aid to the collection center established in the Historic Center. This aid was part of the first shipment, and the government stated that “the people of Mexico keep alive their tradition of solidarity with the peoples of Latin America and, in particular, with the people of Cuba. Our country has always provided assistance to our sister nations in need.”

Prior to this, two ships carrying a total of 800 tons of humanitarian aid from Mexico arrived in Cuba, as part of the strengthening of ties of solidarity between the two governments in the face of the complex situation in Cuba.

Mexico has repeatedly expressed its support for Cuba’s sovereignty, rejecting policies that violate this principle and promote hostility towards the island.
