Cuban ambassador thanks message from former Mexican president

by Ed Newman

Cuba’s Ambassador to Mexico, Eugenio Martínez, expressed his gratitude to former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018–2024) following a message in which the former leader called for support for the Cuban people.

“Thank you, Mr. President. The Cuban people, who admire you, feel supported by their Mexican brothers and sisters who have affirmed their dignity and sense of justice in the face of the crime the U.S. is committing against Cuba. Thanks to you—and to many people around the world—#CubaIsNotAlone,” the diplomat asserted last night on X.

On the same social media platform, López Obrador invited Mexicans to make deposits into an account established by citizens, writers, and journalists to purchase food, medicine, oil, and gasoline intended for the people of the Caribbean nation.

“I am in retirement, but it pains me to see attempts to exterminate—solely for their ideals of freedom and defense of sovereignty—our brotherly people of Cuba,” he stated.

The former head of state reminded “those who think this is someone else’s fight” of what “General (Lázaro) Cárdenas said during the Bay of Pigs invasion: ‘It is not right to advocate for our indifference toward their heroic struggle, for their fate is our own.’”

“Consequently,” he added: “I invite everyone to make a deposit into Banorte account 1358451779—held by the civil association *Humanidad con América Latina* [Humanity with Latin America]—which was opened by citizens, writers, and journalists to purchase food, medicine, oil, and gasoline, and to help the Cuban people. Let everyone contribute whatever they can!” On Tuesday, the newspaper *La Jornada* issued a call to support Cuba and publicized the aforementioned bank account, established to collect financial contributions from those wishing to cooperate in purchasing goods to be shipped to the country, amidst the intensification of the blockade imposed by the United States.

“We issue a firm call for solidarity with the Cuban people and for an end to arrogant and aggressive unilateralism,” declared the more than 200 signatories—including writer Elena Poniatowska, Spanish intellectual Ignacio Ramonet, and executives from the media outlet—through the appeal.

In the written statement, titled “Cuba’s Destiny Is Not Alien to Us,” they likewise urged support for “all governmental or citizen-led actions undertaken with the aim of protecting human well-being, integrity, and dignity” in the Caribbean nation.
