The 2026 Football Finalissima has Been Cancelled

por Javier Perez Jimenez

Havana, March 15 (RHC) – The Finalissima between Spain, champion of Euro 2024, and Argentina, winner of the Copa America 2024, was cancelled today after it was confirmed that the match scheduled for March 27 in Qatar could not be played.

The decision was announced by UEFA after intense discussions with Qatari organisers and amidst the current political situation in the region, which made it impossible to guarantee the match would take place.

The game, conceived as a clash between the champions of Europe and South America in collaboration with CONMEBOL, was initially scheduled for March 27 and was meant to bring together two of the most powerful national teams in international football.

According to the European governing body, attempts to find an alternative venue also failed after the Argentine Football Association refused to play the match at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.

UEFA indicated that other options were also explored, such as a two-legged tie between Madrid and Buenos Aires or finding a neutral venue in Europe, but all proved unfeasible.

Argentina proposed playing the match after the upcoming World Cup, but this also fell through due to a lack of available dates in the Spanish national team’s schedule.

The governing body of European football regretted the cancellation of an event conceived as a symbol of cooperation between continents and thanked both the Qatar organising committee and Real Madrid CF and the Royal Spanish Football Federation for their collaboration in the attempts to keep the match alive.
