Solidarity activists affirm that to stand with Cuba is to stand with humanity

by Ed Newman

On the occasion of Saturday’s observance of the International Day of Solidarity with the “largest island of the Antilles,” members of the *Convoy Nuestra América* (Our America Convoy) gathered at the Pabellón Cuba in Havana. The convoy brings together more than 600 activists hailing from 33 countries.

Claudia de la Cruz — a former U.S. presidential candidate and Executive Director of the religious movement *Pastors for Peace* — who also attended the event in Havana’s Vedado district, stated exclusively to the Cuban News Agency (ACN) that much work remains to be done: “We continue walking alongside Cuba, but there is still a road ahead to travel.”

She pointed out that the greatest responsibility for sustaining the anti-imperialist struggle “from within” the empire falls precisely upon Americans themselves, in order to prevent yet another crime against humanity.

She added that regardless of any political ideology, the primary response to any injustice — such as the one currently being endured by the Cuban people — must be to reaffirm our shared humanity, and to possess the conscience and capacity to view others as fellow human beings.

“We must recognize the most basic needs and rights that we all share on this planet; otherwise, we risk losing our very humanity.”

The initiative to dedicate this date to a solidarity-based struggle—aimed at ensuring Cuba is not abandoned to its fate in the face of imperial ambitions—seeks to transcend borders, as well as political and ideological barriers. Its goal is to reach the hearts of every person of integrity worldwide, thereby shifting public perception regarding the events currently unfolding.

According to David Adler, Co-Coordinator of the Progressive International, the fundamental objective—as he recently affirmed—is to articulate an International Front of Solidarity with Cuba.

In the Cuban people lies the inspiration to continue the struggle and to remain resilient. “It is for the sake of this town — which has been without electricity for so long and yet works miracles to resolve its problems — and for the students who face such difficulties in getting to school, that we are making this enormous sacrifice,” stated Ada Galano, National Coordinator of Cubans Residing in Italy, in an exclusive interview with the ACN.

Ada Galano noted that when the homeland calls, one must answer; that is why she came to see her people — a people who remain standing and fighting. “And it is for Cuba that I am preparing two more shipping containers in Italy, to bring supplies to the hospitals that are in such dire need of them,” she declared. “One must come to Cuba — with love in one’s heart — to witness the consequences of the blockade and to continue fighting for the triumph of justice and reason.”
