Donation drive for Cuba in Dominican Republic this Sunday

by Ed Newman

The Dominican People’s National Solidarity Campaign, “Cuba is not alone!”, is holding a donation drive on Sunday for medicine and food destined for the island, amidst the tightening of the U.S. blockade.

In addition to the economic restrictions in place for more than six decades, new measures of pressure have been added, such as the executive order signed in January of this year by President Donald Trump, through which he imposed an energy blockade on Cuba.

The organizers indicated that the donation drive will begin at 10:00 a.m. local time in Independence Park, located in the Colonial City of Santo Domingo, with the participation of various social sectors.

The Campaign highlighted the solidarity tradition of that Caribbean nation, which—despite the limitations imposed by the economic, commercial, and financial blockade—has provided cooperation to numerous countries, including the Dominican Republic. Therefore, it considered this an opportune moment to reciprocate that support.

On March 17, more than twenty social, cultural, patriotic, and community organizations in the country called for strengthening solidarity with the Cuban people, emphasizing the historical ties that bind both nations.

During a press conference, these organizations announced the campaign “Cuba is not alone!” and stressed the need to promote concrete actions in the face of the complex situation the island is experiencing.

On that occasion, Roberto Payano, president of the Dominican Campaign of Solidarity with Cuba, reported on the collection of medicines, medical supplies, and everyday items in different municipalities and provinces of the country, as well as the promotion of energy cooperation initiatives, including the shipment of solar kits.

He also explained that several collection centers were set up in different locations, including the library of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo, the headquarters of the Dominican Teachers Association and its municipal committees, the Multithematic School, and the headquarters of the Revolutionary Force party.

Other locations included the National Confederation of Trade Union Unity (CNUS), the Ce-Mujer organization, the Committee of Solidarity with the Peoples in Barahona, and a bank account opened by the Campaign to receive donations.
