by Javier Perez Jimenez

Havana, April 8 (RHC) – Atletico Madrid defeated FC Barcelona two goals to zero today in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals (UEFA Champions League).

The match began with FC Barcelona creating several chances that ended with shots on goal against Atlético, guarded by Juan Muso.

As the first half drew to a close, Barcelona defender Pau Cubarsi committed a last-man foul, resulting in his expulsion and a free kick that winger Julián Álvarez converted into the first goal for his team. With one player less on the pitch, Barcelona manager Hansi Flick brought on Fermín López and Pablo Páez in an attempt to change the dynamic in the second half and find an equalizer.

The second goal for Atlético came in the 70th minute of the second half when full-back Matteo Ruggeri delivered a cross into the heart of the penalty area, which Norwegian striker Alexander Sørloth headed home to seal the victory.

The second leg of the quarter-final between the red and whites and those from the Catalan city will be played next Tuesday at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano in the Spanish capital.
