Huge demonstration on Sunday in Madrid to support Cuba

by Ed Newman

Hundreds of people participated on Sunday in a demonstration in support of Cuba and against the United States blockade, marching through areas of downtown Madrid.

The march, which took place from the Atocha roundabout to the Plaza de la Provincia, next to the Plaza Mayor, included songs, slogans, and the display of signs demanding an end to the White House’s hostility toward the Caribbean island.

The State Movement of Solidarity with Cuba (MESC) in Spain organized the demonstration under the slogan “For the end of the United States blockade against Cuba.”

Sixty-nine solidarity associations and groups across Spain joined the initiative, marching in an orderly fashion through the streets of Madrid until they reached the steps of the Palacio de Santa Cruz, headquarters of the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation.

The demonstration is part of the emergency campaign launched by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation (MESC) under the slogan “Against the US Blockade, Energy for Cuba,” which runs until April 30th.

The organizers also highlighted the coincidence of April 19 with the anniversary of the victory at Playa Girón, an emblematic date for the Cuban Revolution, considered “the first military defeat of imperialism in the Americas.”

Regarding various actions taken by the Donald Trump administration against Cuba, the demonstrators demanded respect for the independence, sovereignty, and right to self-determination of the Caribbean nation.

“A collective punishment against the Cuban people, a massive violation of international law that seeks to suffocate the island by preventing it from accessing oil and other essential energy resources,” the MESC stated in a press release.

At the same time, the Movement has opened bank accounts for various local associations to raise funds for the purchase of photovoltaic renewable energy equipment, food, and medical supplies.

“We not only take to the streets to denounce this situation, but we also channel direct material solidarity to Cuba. That is the dual dimension of our commitment: political denunciation and humanitarian aid,” they concluded.
