Support for Cuba, Venezuela and Palestine at Brazilian Workers’ Party Congress

by Ed Newman

The Eighth National Congress of Brazil’s Workers’ Party (PT), which concluded on Saturday, included acts of international solidarity, with a special focus on Cuba, Venezuela, and Palestine.

Diplomatic and parliamentary representatives from these countries denounced sanctions, military aggression, and violations of international law, while advocating for cooperation among nations as a path to peace and sovereignty.

For his part, the Cuban ambassador to Brazil, Víctor Cairo, rejected the United States’ economic, commercial, and financial blockade against the Caribbean island, which now includes an energy embargo.

He stated that this is a policy of ongoing aggression aimed at hindering the development of the Cuban people and destroying the Revolution, which has lasted more than 67 years.

And Cuba’s Ambassador to Brazil, Víctor Cairo, emphasized that his nation continues to strive to generate hope and prosperity, and thanked the Workers’ Party (PT) for the invitation to the congress and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva for his pronouncements against this US policy.

Venezuelan Congressman Saúl Ortega recalled the military aggression against Caracas and other parts of his country ordered by Donald Trump on January 3, which resulted in the deaths of more than 100 people, including 32 from Cuba.

This attack led to the kidnapping of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Congresswoman Cilia Flores, who have been imprisoned in New York ever since.

According to Ortega, Venezuela has suffered political and media attacks, as well as attempts at destabilization and violence against state institutions. In response, he stated, the Venezuelan people have demonstrated resilience and the will to reaffirm their sovereignty in the face of external pressures.

He affirmed that Venezuela remains committed to regional unity and the construction of a socialist project initiated with the rise to power of Hugo Chávez (1954-2013) in February 1999.

On behalf of Palestine, its ambassador in Brasilia, Marwan Jebril, lamented the situation in Gaza due to Israeli attacks from October 2023 to the present, although, he specified, a ceasefire exists.

He stated that this constitutes a systematic violation of international law and reiterated that the Palestinian people will continue their struggle for freedom and self-determination.

The ambassador of the Arab League in Brazil, Ibrahim Alzeben, emphasized the importance of the Palestinian cause for the world and defended the borders of the territory demarcated in 1967.

He also noted the need to strengthen mechanisms of international solidarity and expressed confidence in Lula’s leadership in multilateral forums.
