Caravan in Panama condemns U.S. blockade of Cuba

by Ed Newman

At the initiative of the Martí Association of Cubans Residing in Panama (AMCRP), a caravan travelled through the main streets of Panama City on Sunday to condemn the blockade imposed by the United States on the island.

According to the announcement, at a time of increasing threats from Washington against Havana, members of solidarity, labor, indigenous, social, and student organizations, among others, joined the caravan and culminated in an act of support for the people of Cuba at the emblematic Belisario Porras Park, next to the bust honoring the memory of National Hero José Martí.

In a statement, the group noted that “The United States government has intensified its threats of aggression. These are not empty words; they speak of invasion, of bombs, of further punishment against our families in Cuba, who have already endured decades of resistance to a criminal blockade.”

The Amcrp stated in its message disseminated on social media: “How is it possible that in the 21st century there are those who wish for bombs and death against our families in Cuba? How is it possible to speak of invading an island that is only defending its right to exist in peace? These questions are painful. We cannot remain silent.”

Therefore, the group considered this caravan to have a special significance.

“We are once again taking to the streets to denounce the spirit of hatred, threats, and war. We will raise our voices against more than six decades of genocide, with a massive presence, with flags, with signs, with the strength of dignity.”

In recent statements to the press, Humberto Pérez, national coordinator of the Cuban Association of Cuban People’s Revolution (AMCRP), affirmed that in the face of renewed pressure from the White House, the response has always been firm and clear: we categorically reject any threat or act of aggression against Cuba, regardless of its origin, and particularly from the United States.

The Association is inspired by the thought of José Martí, who warned of the danger of U.S. expansionism and fought for a free and sovereign Cuba. It defends the right of Cubans to decide their own destiny without external interference, he added.

Among the actions undertaken, he highlighted public statements condemning any coercive or intimidating measures, cultural activities, mobilization of the Cuban community for initiatives such as protest caravans, and coordination with other solidarity organizations with Cuba in Central America and the region to pressure governments and international organizations, among others.

“We are not neutral in the face of aggression. Residing outside of Cuba does not mean disengaging from its fate. On the contrary, it gives us a vantage point from which to defend it from where we are, with truth and dignity as our weapons.”
