The Cuban Association of the United Nations (ACNU) has condemned the Trump administration’s hostile policy against the island nation, which violates the UN Charter and the sovereignty of other states, and infringes upon the human rights of the entire population of the archipelago.
In a statement issued Friday, the ACNU stressed that this stance of the current US government also undermines the principles of peaceful settlement of disputes and jeopardizes the peace and security of the region.
It added that it also violates Cuba’s right to development and infringes upon the civil and political rights of the Cuban people.
The Association rejected President Trump’s Executive Order of May 1st, which intensifies the siege against Cuba to extreme levels, and the devastating impact of an economic, commercial, financial, and technological blockade of more than 60 years.
It also denounced that a military aggression against Cuba would mean the death of children, adolescents, young people, women, the elderly, people with disabilities, and other vulnerable groups.
Finally, the Cuban Association of the United Nations (ACNU) called for opposition to the Trump administration’s policy of exterminating the Cuban population and its attempts to invade a sovereign, independent, resilient, socialist, and sustainable nation.
Below, we transmit the full text of the Cuban Association of the United Nations’ statement:
The Cuban Association of the United Nations (ACNU) strongly condemns and rejects the Executive Order of the President of the United States, Donald Trump, of May 1st. This new and criminal legal concoction deepens the siege of our country to extreme levels, exacerbating the devastating impact of the genocidal economic, commercial, financial, and technological blockade imposed on Cuba for more than six long decades, including its energy dimension initiated by President Donald Trump in 2019 during his first term.
The recent onslaught by the Republican administration against Cuba seeks to break, once again, the firm demonstration of independence and sovereignty of our people, manifested in the signatures of more than six million Cubans on the petition “My Signature for the Homeland,” as well as in the massive May Day demonstrations. It is also part of the attempt to completely suffocate our population, a plan devised in 1960 by then-Assistant Secretary of State for Inter-American Affairs, Lester Mallory.
Washington’s obstinate and criminal policy against the Cuban nation takes on new dimensions in light of President Trump’s threat to militarily invade our beloved homeland.
Our Association, whose founding principles include the defense and promotion of the Charter of the United Nations, denounces before the international community that the Trump administration’s policy against Cuba:
Grossly violates the Charter of the United Nations, in particular the principles of sovereign equality and self-determination of peoples;
Also undermines the principles of peaceful settlement of disputes and the abstention of members of the Organization from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any State;
Extends the extraterritorial scope of the blockade and constitutes a gross violation of the sovereignty of other States and the rights of natural and legal persons residing in them;
Seriously endangers the peace and security of the region, disrespecting, once again, the decision of the CELAC member states to declare Latin America and the Caribbean a Zone of Peace;
Violates our country’s right to development, also recognized as an inalienable and indivisible human right;
It would mean the death of a portion of our population, unable to receive the necessary medical care due to the lack of electricity, medicine, and other supplies needed for their treatments;
It violates the civil and political rights of the Cuban people by attempting to change the political, economic, and social system that Cubans chose when they adopted the 2019 Constitution of the Republic, in full exercise of the principle of self-determination enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations;
It violates all the human rights of the entire Cuban population, including the rights to food, health, a healthy environment, sustainable development, psychological and physical well-being, culture, happiness, and ultimately, their right to life;
It deeply wounds the Cuban family, whose bonds have been strained for decades.
The Cuban Association of the United Nations denounces that a military aggression against Cuba would mean the death of our children, adolescents, young people, women, senior citizens, people with disabilities and other vulnerable groups. In short, it would represent the death of hundreds of thousands of peace-loving Cubans, whose solidarity and humanitarian vocation has always been present in the praxis of the Cuban Revolution.
Our Association, on behalf of its members, associations, networks, movements, community leaders, and other social actors with whom it collaborates, calls upon the Secretary-General of the United Nations, all member states of the organization, people of goodwill and peace-loving individuals, international civil society, and the international community in general, to oppose the Trump administration’s policy of exterminating the Cuban population and its attempts to invade our sovereign, independent, resilient, socialist and sustainable nation.
