Cuba thanks BRICS for statement demanding U.S. end the blockade

by Ed Newman

The Government of Cuba expressed its “sincere gratitude” to the BRICS member countries for their statements rejecting the blockade imposed by the United States on the Caribbean island, made within the framework of the bloc’s XVIII Meeting of Foreign Ministers, held in India.

In a message posted on its social media, the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that paragraph 19 of the Declaration of the Indian Pro Tempore Presidency condemns the imposition of unilateral coercive measures, particularly the application of so-called “secondary sanctions” of a distinctly extraterritorial nature, such as those contained in the Executive Order issued by the Washington government on May 1 against Cuba, and the attempts to impose an energy blockade against the island.

Cuba also valued the concern expressed in paragraph 32 of said Declaration, signed by the BRICS foreign ministers, regarding the aggressive escalation by the United States, the publication indicated.

Furthermore, it applauded the support given by the regional political bloc to the character of Latin America and the Caribbean as a zone of peace and the repeated call to end the economic, commercial, and financial blockade.

In the signed declaration, the BRICS foreign ministers also endorsed a profound reform of the global governance system, including the United Nations and the Bretton Woods institutions, with the aim of expanding the participation of developing countries and the Global South.

The bloc expressed its concern about the situation in the Middle East and North Africa. Regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the BRICS reaffirmed the two-state solution based on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The diplomats condemned the Israeli attacks in Gaza, demanded an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, and called for full humanitarian access. For Lebanon, they called for compliance with the ceasefire along with the withdrawal of Israeli forces, while for Syria, they advocated for a peaceful, inclusive political transition free from foreign interference.
