President Miguel Díaz-Canel denounces new U.S. aggressions against Cuba

by Ed Newman

The President of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, has denounced the new measure announced by the United States government against Cuban officials and entities, within the framework of the aggressions that US imperialism is waging against the island.

“Within the leadership of our Party, State, Government, and its military institutions, no one has any assets or property to protect under U.S. jurisdiction,” the Cuban president stated on his X account.

The statement comes after the U.S. Treasury Department added Cuban politicians to its sanctions list on Monday, including Juan Esteban Lazo, president of the National Assembly; Roberto Morales Ojeda, secretary of organization of the Communist Party of Cuba; as well as ministers and military personnel. The sanctions also included the National Revolutionary Police (PNR), the Ministry of the Interior (MININT), and its Directorate of Intelligence (DI).

“The anti-Cuban rhetoric of hate tries to create the illusion of these sanctions in order to justify the escalation of its total economic war,” the president asserted in his post regarding this latest false accusation by the U.S., making it clear that the government “knows this perfectly well, so much so that there isn’t even any evidence to present.”

The Cuban president also denounced the impact of the blockade, which has intensified in recent weeks and has affected the island’s ability to obtain fuel by “sanctioning third parties that want to sell fuel to Cuba” and penalizing companies that want to invest in or supply basic goods to the country. “That is why we will continue to denounce, in the firmest and most energetic way, the genocidal siege that seeks to strangle our people,” Díaz-Canel reaffirmed.

The escalating pressure from the United States government, with this executive order of May 1st, represents a new attempt to force Cuba to submit to its interests through the economic and oil blockade and strangulation. “The collective punishment to which the Cuban people are being subjected is an act of genocide that must be condemned by international organizations and its perpetrators prosecuted,” the president stated in his post on X.

Cuba is experiencing a very complex situation due to fuel shortages that have disrupted services throughout the country and the constant threats from the United States regarding its intentions to seize the country.

The Cuban president warned about the possible consequences of a U.S. intervention, describing the potential scenario of a military confrontation in the country as a “bloodbath with incalculable consequences,” and reaffirmed that Cuba is not a threat to any country.
