Cuba was elected on Tuesday as a member of the General Committee of the 79th World Health Assembly, representing the Americas region, during the opening session of the event, which is being held in Geneva, Switzerland, until May 23rd.
The General Committee, made up of 17 member states, acts as the leading body of the World Health Assembly, which is the supreme decision-making body of the World Health Organization (WHO), explained a statement on the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs website.
The Assembly meets once a year in Geneva and its functions include adopting decisions on WHO policies, approving the budget, and appointing the Director-General of the organization.
The Cuban delegation to the 79th World Health Assembly is headed by First Deputy Minister of Public Health, Tania Margarita Cruz Hernández.
Cuba’s election as a member of the General Committee is a recognition of the trajectory of the Cuban health system and its contribution to international health cooperation, despite the limitations imposed by the United States’ economic, commercial, and financial blockade, which has intensified in recent months with the energy blockade.
