ALBA-TCP calls accusation against Raul Castro “illegitimate and illegal”

by Ed Newman

The Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America-Peoples’ Trade Treaty (ALBA-TCP) called the indictment brought by the United States Department of Justice against Raúl Castro Ruz, leader of the Cuban Revolution, “illegitimate and illegal.”

In a statement, the Latin American and Caribbean integration bloc expressed its “deep concern” regarding the recent economic measures aimed at strangling the Republic of Cuba, a founding member of the Alliance.

Likewise, it expressed its firm rejection of the escalating actions by the U.S. government, “including the illegitimate and illegal indictment of the leader of the Cuban Revolution, Army General Raúl Castro Ruz.”

Furthermore, the Alliance emphasized that these measures are focused on “fabricating pretexts for military aggression,” which only serves to increase tensions and create an atmosphere of confrontation in the region.

In the document, the organization emphasized that Latin America and the Caribbean is a Zone of Peace and rejected “any threat, coercive action, or attempt at armed aggression against Cuba or any country in the region.”

It also stated that such actions are contrary to the principles of sovereignty, non-interference, and self-determination of nations, as stipulated in the Charter of the United Nations and in International Law.

The Alliance urged the United States government to establish ties with Cuba through “respectful dialogue, free from coercion and unilateral measures, prioritizing diplomacy, peaceful coexistence, and mutual respect.”

Finally, it reiterated its full solidarity with the people and government of the Republic of Cuba and reaffirmed its commitment to peace, solidarity-based integration, and the defense of sovereignty and peace in Latin America and the Caribbean.
