Statement from the Regional Office of the Women’s International Democratic Federation (WIDF) in the Americas and the Caribbean

by Ed Newman

The Regional Office of the Women’s International Democratic Federation (WIDF) in the Americas and the Caribbean expresses its strongest rejection and profound indignation at the new accusations and maneuvers promoted by the United States government against Army General Raúl Castro Ruz, historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, a symbol of dignity, resistance, and unwavering commitment to his people.

These actions constitute a new escalation of the aggressive and hostile policy maintained for decades against Cuba, aimed not only at tarnishing the image of an upright, compassionate, and profoundly humane man, but also at offending the heroic history of the Cuban people and their legitimate right to defend their sovereignty and independence.

Raúl Castro Ruz has dedicated his life to building a more just, equitable, and humane society. His loyalty to Cuba, his revolutionary ethics, and his commitment to social justice make him a figure respected by the peoples of the world. He has been a tireless defender of the rights of Cuban women and women around the world, promoting policies of equality, dignity, and well-being that strengthened the role of women in Cuban society and expanded their rights and opportunities.

The FDIM also recognizes Raúl’s compassion for children and young people, as well as his unwavering commitment to education, health, culture, and the overall well-being of future generations. His sense of social justice and his advocacy for peace have transcended Cuba’s borders, becoming an ethical benchmark for peoples striving for a better world.

During his presidency, Raúl Castro Ruz served as a guarantor of the peace process in Colombia, contributing decisively to the dialogues that paved the way for reconciliation in the sister nation of Colombia. He also spearheaded the reestablishment of diplomatic relations between Cuba and the United States, demonstrating his commitment to dialogue and civilized coexistence between nations. Likewise, it facilitated the historic meeting between Pope Francis and Patriarch Kirill of Russia, an event of enormous significance for ecumenical dialogue and world peace.

It is unacceptable that those who today seek to act as judges are precisely those responsible for a long history of terrorism and aggression against Cuba. The Cuban people have not forgotten the bombing of the La Coubre ship, the Barbados crime, the introduction of African swine fever and dengue hemorrhagic fever as part of a biological war against the island, nor the terrorist attacks against the Capri, Nacional, and Copacabana hotels.

They are also responsible for the most systematic violation of human rights against the Cuban people: the cruel, inhumane, and unjust economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed more than six decades ago and recently intensified through an energy blockade that attempts to stifle the daily lives of the people.

The FDIM reaffirms that Cuba has the full right to self-defense, as established in Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations. Attempting to distort historical events that occurred more than thirty years ago is a crude political operation rife with falsehoods, designed to fabricate pretexts to justify further aggression and even fuel dangerous calls for military intervention against Cuba.

But they will not succeed. Cuba is an example of resistance, solidarity, steadfastness, peace, and social justice. No hate campaign can break the dignity of a people who have known how to resist with courage and conviction.

Raúl Castro Ruz does not belong solely to the Cuban people. Raúl is also a moral treasure for the peoples of the world because of his principles, his courage, his humanism, and his unwavering faith in victory. To try to tarnish his image is to try to extinguish hope, to try to deny the “Yes, we can” spirit, to try to stop the possibility of building a better and more just world.

The FDIM Regional Office for the Americas and the Caribbean urgently calls upon women worldwide, social organizations, popular movements, progressive forces, and peace defenders to categorically reject this shameless act by the United States government and to raise their voices in defense of the truth, Cuba’s sovereignty, and the honor of Army General Raúl Castro Ruz.

Because dignity cannot be slandered.

Because history cannot be erased.

Because Cuba is not alone.
