Cubans residing in Italy condemn the political and economic attacks, as well as the threat of military aggression by the United States against their country, and demand that the international community halt this escalation, according to a spokesperson in Rome.
Indira Pineda, spokesperson for the associations of Cuban nationals residing in Italy, stated in declarations to the RAI television network, from the southern city of Naples, that “we want to denounce that our country is being attacked by a very serious blockade, which is suffocating our economy.”
The political pressures and the economic strangulation measures, intensified by the executive orders signed on January 29 and May 1 by US President Donald Trump, “violate the human rights of our people and also violate international law,” the Cuban sociologist stated.
In this European country, “thanks to a vast network of solidarity, we have been able to send solar panels, medicine, and food,” but this aid “is unfortunately a drop in the ocean,” so it is necessary to increase international pressure on the United States government to lift this blockade,” he said.
Referring to the massive demonstrations of support for Cuba that spread throughout the Italian peninsula from last Thursday through the weekend, Pineda told Prensa Latina that “as Cubans, we join the fight to defend our people and also to denounce a possible military aggression.”
“Cuba is a peaceful nation, which has always defended its sovereignty and shared its solidarity and resources with other nations of the world, and today is a very delicate moment, which is why we ask that our country not be bombed,” he said.
“The path to resolving conflicts must be dialogue, friendship, and fraternity, as our country’s history has shown,” Pineda pointed out.
“Our families and our brothers and sisters are there, “Our children are affected, and that’s why all we want is peace and tranquility for them,” the activist stated, reaffirming, “That’s why we say down with the blockade!” And “Long live the Cuban resistance!”
Among other actions, in mid-May, associations of Cubans residing in Italy sent open letters to the Italian Parliament and Government, and delivered them to Pope Leo XIV, requesting greater support for their people’s cause in the face of brutal U.S. pressure.
Cubans living in Italy also marched through the streets of Rome, Milan, Naples, Florence, Bologna, Genoa, and dozens of other cities in recent days, as part of the wave of people who took to the streets in defense of the Caribbean nation in the face of increasing U.S. imperialist pressure.
During one of the largest demonstrations in recent days, held in Rome on May 28, Cuban Irma Castillo raised her voice on behalf of her compatriots to thank the growing support of the Italian people, condemn the attacks by the United States, and reaffirm “her country’s firm will to resist and prevail.”
