Various organizations belonging to the State Movement of Solidarity with Cuba (MESC) held demonstrations and vigils this Friday, June 5, in front of US diplomatic missions in Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, as part of the international campaign #PetróleoPaCuba (Oil for Cuba).
The actions, organized under the slogans “#PetróleoPaCuba” (Oil for Cuba), “#LetCubaLive,” and “#CubaNoEstáSola” (Cuba Is Not Alone), were part of an International Days of Mobilization held between May 30 and June 7 in front of U.S. embassies and consulates in various countries. Their objective was to denounce the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by Washington against Cuba and, in particular, the measures aimed at preventing fuel supplies to the island.
In Madrid, activists held a vigil in front of the U.S. Embassy, while in Barcelona, Valencia, and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, demonstrations took place in front of the respective U.S. consulates.
The organizing groups denounced that the growing energy difficulties facing Cuba are a direct consequence of the intensification of the U.S. economic war, which seeks to obstruct the arrival of oil, fuel, and other resources essential for the functioning of the country’s economy and basic services.
During the demonstrations, protesters demanded an end to the sanctions and unilateral coercive measures against Cuba, as well as respect for the sovereignty of the Caribbean nation. Participants also expressed their solidarity with the Cuban people and their rejection of a policy that directly affects the living conditions of millions.
The organizing groups stated that these mobilizations were held “for the right to life, for sovereignty, and for peace,” and denounced the energy blockade as part of a strategy of economic strangulation designed to provoke greater social and economic hardship in Cuba.
The vigils and demonstrations of June 5th thus joined a broad international solidarity campaign that continues to demand the lifting of the blockade and an end to all measures of economic aggression against the island.
