The municipal councils of the Italian city of Genoa and of Rome VII, in the capital, approved motions in support of Cuba, condemning the blockade and threats from the United States against that country, according to a spokesperson in Rome.
Marco Papacci, president of the National Association of Italy-Cuba Friendship (ANAIC), shared with Prensa Latina the texts in which both local government bodies express their support for the island and for the development of initiatives to alleviate the consequences of the criminal U.S. measures, which violate the human rights of the Cuban people.
The document presented in Genoa, capital of the northern region of Liguria, was endorsed by representatives of the Green Left Alliance (AVS), formed by the Green Europe and Italian Left parties, as well as the Five Star Movement (M5S) and the Democratic Party (PD), among other political forces.
It reaffirms solidarity with the Cuban people and condemns the economic, commercial, and financial blockade that the United States has maintained for more than 60 years, “despite repeated condemnations from the international community,” which has intensified in recent months with an oil embargo and other measures of a genocidal nature.
The text describes the grave consequences of this imperialist policy, which attempts to subjugate a people through economic pressure and threats of the use of force, and points out that despite their seriousness, such actions still receive limited attention, even though pronouncements by local authorities are widespread throughout Italy.
In fact, similar resolutions supporting Cuba were recently approved in the cities of Turin, Florence, Poggibonsi, and Crema, as well as in Rome. In Rome, a motion issued centrally by the mayor’s office in early April of this year was joined by similar resolutions adopted in several of its 15 municipalities.
Among these latter resolutions, according to Papacci, is that of Municipality VII, which called for the activation of all cooperation channels in support of the Cuban healthcare system, which has been severely impacted by the U.S. embargo. The resolution also proposes that the network of 45 municipal pharmacies in Rome (Farmacap) donate medicines to the Cuban people.
The resolution also proposes that Municipality Rome VII actively participate in the Energy for Life initiative.
As a result of this campaign, launched in September 2025 in support of the Cuban electrical system by ANAIC, the Italian General Confederation of Labour (CGIL), the ARCI Social Promoter, and the National Association of Italian Partisans (ANPI), more than 300,000 euros have already been raised for various projects.
The document, approved by the 7th Municipality of Rome, also demands that the highest local authorities, including the mayor, publicly express their solidarity with the Cuban people and their concern about the effects of the US economic blockade.
