The third “Nuestra America” (Our America) Brigade will arrive in Guantánamo province on August 13, as part of a tour of six Cuban territories, designed to deliver humanitarian aid directly to communities facing the economic strangulation imposed by the U.S. blockade.
This initiative, which brings together solidarity-minded friends of Cuba and human rights defenders from various nations, originates in Rome, Italy, and is not defined as a commemorative mission but as a concrete act of choice in the face of measures that cut off essential supplies to the population.
The date coincides with the centennial of the birth of Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro Ruz, but the organizers emphasize that the focus is on the hands that deliver and the faces that receive.
In Guantánamo, the brigade’s agenda begins in Baracoa, the First City, the first town founded by the Spanish in Cuba in 1511, where they will be received at the Cocoa Museum.
The following day, August 14, they will travel to the municipality of Maisí to deliver donations to the primary school and the La Tinta polyclinic, and later visit the Punta de Maisí Lighthouse, located at the easternmost point of the Cuban archipelago.
At this emblematic site, they will meet with the person in charge of the facility and with residents, in a day enlivened by community cultural performances.
Returning to Baracoa on the 15th, the brigade will join the celebrations for the 515th anniversary of the town’s founding, and on the main day, they will make a donation to the Octavio de la Concepción y la Pedaraja Hospital.
They will also visit the “Macuchile” Folk Art Fair and attend the Solemn Session convened by the Municipal Assembly of People’s Power, the official event with which the territory celebrates its founding anniversary each year.
On Saturday, August 16, the convoy will arrive in Caimanera, where they will view a scale model of the territory and enjoy a panoramic view of Guantánamo Bay, including the naval base occupied by the United States against the will of the Cuban people.
After their visit to Caimanera, the group will travel to the provincial capital to immerse themselves in the Guantánamo Carnival. The program includes a daytime tour of the festive areas and an evening enjoyment of the carnival structures from the space designated by BioCubaCafé, the Cuban coffee marketing entity that promotes coffee culture and family entertainment during these popular festivities.
Throughout their stay, the brigade will articulate in each place the same principle: to be with those who build the country daily despite the shortages induced by the external blockade; thus, the Guantanamo journey adds to the planned stops in Holguín, Granma, Santiago de Cuba, Villa Clara and Havana, as a configuration of a map of solidarity that runs through the Caribbean nation.
